Accomplishments in 2005

RALLIES
- March 5, 2005 at Sproul Plaza, UC Berkeley. Nearly 1,000 persons attended this rally. Program participants, alumni, parents, community members, and campus supporters attended. Speakers also included Barbara Johnson, Congressman George Miller’s district director who read a letter of commitment from the Mr. Miller assailing the President’s assault on education programs and expressing the Congressman’s support of Talent Search and Upward Bound. Letters from Congressman Pete Stark and Congresswoman Barbara Lee committing their support for TRIO were read.
- March 7, 2005 at Hollywood and Vine in Hollywood, CA. Nearly 300 persons demonstrated on Hollywood Boulevard in support of Federal TRIO Programs. Participants included concerned citizens, alumni, and community members.
- March 31, 2005 at Civic Center Plaza in San Francisco, CA. In concert with “Speak Up For Kids” rally over 700 attended to hear House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi publicly express her support for Upward Bound and Talent Search. Several students and alumni also spoke.
MEDIA
- Television coverage of the March 5 th rally on KTVU, Fox affiliate for the San Francisco Bay Area and stories on the 6pm and 10pm news. Also on Univision, Spanish television channel 14 for the San Francisco Bay Area, lead story on the 6pm news and also on the 11pm news. Film clips from the rally and interviews with students, alumni, staff, and supporters.
- Television coverage of the March 7 th rally on KTLA, channel 5 in Los Angeles with story on the 10pm news. Also extensive interviews with program alumni and staff about the impact of the proposed cuts in funding.
- Television coverage of the March 31 st rally on KTVU and Univision. Interviews with students and staff about the impact of the proposed cuts and the value of the programs.
- Production of a DVD covering the March 5 th and March 7 th rallies for distribution.
- Interviews on the Pacifica Radio Network, serving California, New York, Texas, and Washington, DC, providing information and historical background about Upward Bound and Talent Search.
- Numerous newsprint articles about the proposed cuts including the Oakland Tribune and the Pacific Citizen, newspaper of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL).
LEGISLATIVE IMPACT
- Letter from California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the Labor, HHS, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee stressing the importance of the TRIO Upward Bound and Talent Search programs to the state of California urging that the programs’ funding is restored.
- Letter of support from the Oakland Education Association and inclusion into the platform of the National Education Association.
- Assembly Joint Resolution 26 by the California State Assembly requesting that the federal TRIO programs, Upward Bound and Talent Search, continue to be funded.
- Submission of petitions with over 1,000 signatures supporting Upward Bound, Talent Search, and GEAR Up to California Senator Dianne Feinstein’s office.
